Drug laws and licensing

Personal licences

Travellers who are carrying with them prescribed controlled drugs in Schedules 2, 3 and 4 part 1 for personal use abroad (or in the case of an import licence, into the UK) over 28 days will require a personal licence.

For those travelling for over 28 days

You will  need to ask your Doctor to provide us with:

An application for a personal import or export licence  - to be filled in by the traveller's doctor, and sent with a covering letter from the prescribing doctor. Please allow minimum two weeks for issue.

If you are planning to travel for less than 28 days you don't need a personal export licence. BAA/airline regulations permitting you should take the medication in your hand luggage and include a covering letter from your doctor.

Please see the checklist below for guidance:

An official letter outlining these new arrangements can be downloaded by clicking the link below

Embassy Contact Details

Some countries may have their own import regulations for controlled drugs and we would advise travellers to contact a country’s embassy to check.
