Guidance

A lot of guidance on treatment is developed by the National Treatment Agency, see what is available on their website.

Commissioning and Treatment demand model guidance

This document is intended as an initial good practice guide for all commissioners, including those within primary care trusts (PCTs), local authorities and partnerships (joint commissioning managers/joint commissioning groups), responsible for the commissioning of in-patient treatment and residential rehabilitation (Tier 4 interventions) drug and alcohol services. It precedes guidance that will be published later this year, as part of the cross-Government work programme on Tier 4 treatment.

This tool has been developed to help Drug Action Teams match resources to local needs and to help the Department of Health and Home Office plan resource needs at a national level. The tool can also be used to support the monitoring of the performance of the Drugs Strategy and for testing out policy choices by connecting evidence to policy and spending choices.

Other guidance

Guidance on making a planning application in relation to a drugs service - this is a general guide to equip readers involved in setting up drop-in drug treatment services.

Guidance on the National Treatment Agency website (new window) - this guidance has been developed by the NTA in consultation with experts in the field. It provides initial guidance for drug treatment practitioners on the potential role of injectable heroin and injectable methadone substitute maintenance prescribing in local drug treatment systems.
